LinkedIn Tips - Groups & Their Benefits

Groups have been growing rapidly since 2008.  While many have joined them few members have participated in them actively.  Listed below are five things you can do to increase your benefits.  Networking requires activity or no one benefits.

1 - Communicate ("message") easily with all members of the group you belong to even those you do not know.

Certainly there should be a compelling reason to communicate with strangers, but you do share group membership and likely common interests.

Example:  If you are interested in exploring a new industry you might join a group in that field, say renewable energy.

2 - Grow your network readily with those of affinity interest.

You can browse the membership directory to discover new connections and re-establish old ones. You can also invite members of your group to connect without knowing their email address.

Caveat - Invite only those who know you.  When your invitation is refused with "I don't know" five times you lose this invitation privilege and must use an email address for each invitation you extend including to friends, classmates and colleagues.

3 - Initiate and participate in discussions much like Yahoo messaging.

Examples:
  • You can request help in your search for a job, an employee or consultant.
  • You can promote an event or idea

4 - Share news articles, blogs, etc. via weblinks

Example:  Share a link to an event that would be of interest to some members on a conference or event

5 - Join or create your group
Groups are categorized bu not limited to the following categories - Alumni, Conference, Corporation, Networking, Non-Profit, Professional and more.

Recommended Groups to consider in Rochester can be found doing a directory search.  Note:  If the word "Rochester" is not found in the Group' description, it will not be found.

Consider joining the following Rochester groups.  Note:  Read the Group's profile, some groups have requirements and your approval is pending a moderator's action.

Rochester NY Residents, Digital Rochester, PeerNet, The August Group (must have 50 LinkedIn connections to join) and ABCPNG.
